The GitHub Gists API lets you manage gists, which are lightweight code snippets and notes, over HTTP. You can create public or secret gists, read a single gist, and list public gists, your own, a user's, and those you have starred. You can fetch raw file contents, view version history and commits, update a gist by adding, renaming or removing files or changing its description, and delete it. It also supports forking, starring and un-starring, checking star status, and full create, read, update and delete for gist comments.

A good fit for developers building tools that share snippets, store small notes, or sync code samples.

Published for it: OpenAPI, Documentation, JSON Schema, APIs.json and Arazzo.

Kin Score: 79 (exemplar band) for the provider, GitHub. Agent Readiness: 60.4 (agent-ready band), scored 2026-10-23.

Pricing: set by the provider. The catalog describes the access model as freemium with self-serve signup.
